Hi Everyone,
My goal for this newsletter for the new year is 1-2 emails a month, one containing links and one that’s more of a blog. This seems the most sustainable, given the way my day job has dominated my life lately. I think you can tell when I started working in September and my frequency fell off. I only just made it for my imaginary December deadline! And then I thought it would be funny to do a second email to round out the month on the 31st, so here we are.
DAVID by David Beautiful essays on gender, disability, media, etc through the lens of famous Davids. Also sometimes an advice column called GOOD ADVICE/BAD GAY that maybe I’ll talk about on We’ll Take This One someday.
Sick Note by Libby Watson just launched this month. It’s about American healthcare. She left her job at The New Republic to write this so you know that’s something. As far as journalists willingly leaving traditional media for Substack, you can do much much worse and in fact I’d say that Libby is good!
Some newsletters that I’ve mentioned before, but that still deserve a shoutout are unsnackable by folu, Don’t Threaten Me With a Good Lifetime by Amelia, Welcome to Hell World by Luke O’Neil, Men Yell at Me by lyz, and From the Desk of Alicia Kennedy by Alicia Kennedy.
I’ve been watching a lot of YouTube lately, while I knit and procrastinate. I’ve fallen pretty deep into the historical costuming part of the algorithm and found this lovely channel called Sewstine, by a doctor in Saint Louis. I have no idea how she finds the time to make these beautiful dresses, but they look stunning and lushous.
CurrieGOAT makes tutorial videos for punch needle rugs and leatherworking. He has a beautiful art style and a really calming voice.
I know Mikaela Long from Vine, where she made this parody video, which is a reference to this vine, which references this 90’s RnB song. I don’t really know how to describe her channel. It’s a lot of makeup, chatty vlogs, and fun challenges. I think she does them really well, and the selling point is her sweet and funny personality.
According to Spotify, my top played song of the year was I’m Going Home by Arlo Guthrie. Hilarious stuff from someone who moved back in with her parents.
High Flying Bird - Judy Henske
Should Have Known Better - Sufjan Stevens
Bird on a Wire - k.d. lang I still think about the joke from Derry Girls whenever I think of k.d. lang
Gin Gins Original Ginger Chews These are yummy.
Here’s to a better year ahead!
Tell your friends about my newsletter 😛
